Getting Started with Cybersecurity Challenges

A practical guide for schools, teachers and cybersecurity education partners preparing students for Capture the Flag competitions.

Build skills through hands-on challenges

CTF competitions are an engaging way for students to learn and apply cybersecurity concepts. They support independent learning, classroom integration and team-based competition preparation.

This guide highlights free, school-appropriate CTF environments, useful tools and resources for decoding and problem-solving. Many beginner platforms run entirely in a browser and require no special software.

Five-Step Plan

Recruit and prepare your first team

Keep the experience welcoming, collaborative and low-pressure as students build confidence.

Recruit interested students

Look for students who enjoy puzzles, logic games, technology, gaming or coding. STEM clubs, robotics programs, computer science classes and esports groups are good places to start.

  • Announce the opportunity in STEM or computer science classes.
  • Present a short “What is a CTF?” demonstration.
  • Host a cyber challenge lunch-and-learn with one sample problem.

Introduce CTFs in a fun, low-stress way

Choose one or two beginner challenges and solve them together. Good starting points include PicoCTF, Hack The Box Academy, EnterpriseKC’s CTF Demo and the National Cyber Cup practice site.

Set up a simple toolkit

Students need a laptop or Chromebook with internet access, a code or text editor and access to browser-based tools such as CyberChef, Cryptii or dcode.fr. Most beginner platforms require no downloads.

Encourage practice and teamwork

Set aside 30–45 minutes each week. Use a shared document to track progress and flag unsolved challenges. Celebrate small wins—even one solved challenge builds confidence.

Join a live or local competition

Once students are comfortable, look for a school-friendly event. Many competitions are free, virtual and beginner-friendly while building collaboration, time management and technical problem-solving skills.
